Introduction
We are seeking a skilled and qualified Electrical Artisan (Cable Jointer) to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, jointing, and termination of medium voltage (MV) cable systems, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and operational standards. This role requires strong technical expertise in cable jointing, the ability to work independently, and a commitment to maintaining high levels of workmanship in construction and electrical environments. The incumbent will perform jointing and termination on cable systems ranging from 6.6kV to 44kV, working with various cable types such as PILC and XLPE, and handling a wide range of jointing and termination methods. The role also involves ensuring the availability and proper use of tools, materials, and equipment, as well as adherence to strict safety protocols in line with the OHS Act and NOSA standards. In addition to technical responsibilities, the candidate will support quality assurance processes, maintain accurate documentation, and contribute to effective communication with project teams, clients, and management. The role requires a proactive approach to safety, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage tasks across multiple sites. The position demands flexibility, including standby duties and travel across regions, as well as occasional work internationally. The successful candidate must also be willing to assist with basic administrative tasks such as compiling quotations from templates and reporting on project progress.
Job description

CABLE JOINTING KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENT
1. Jointing and termination of cable systems from 6.6kV to 44kV independently 
 
Cable Types
• PILC, XLPE
Systems
• Cross bonded, solid bonded, midpoint bonded, fully insulated.
Joint types 
• Straight through, sheath interrupted, trifurcating, step down, transition heat shrink joint.
Termination types
• Outdoor, indoor, pole, Boot type.
Conductor Joints
a) Copper / Aluminum - compression, Shear off connectors
b) Aluminum – Cad Welding, Shear Off Connector, compression
Fitting of link boxes
• Earth, SVL, terminal, cross bonded, structure mounted and in ground. 
• Earthing Mat Installation
Joint Sealing
• Wiping on lead and aluminum sheathed cables and the fitting of FG boxes and joint supports. 
• Wiping copper caps on oil filled cables
 
2. MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT: 
• Ensures that all the tools, plant, equipment and materials are available for each and every different jointing requirement and that all such equipment is in good working order and condition.
.  Ensures that he has a sufficient supply of the required consumable materials on hand
• Ensures that the jointing material is correct with respect to the jointing instruction and drawings issued by the manufacturer
 
3. SAFETY: 
• Direct the work force in safe working practices and housekeeping as laid down in the NOSA MBO code of practice and the OHS Act.
• Continuously upgrade subordinates’ safety awareness and competence through training as per the training procedure.
• Investigate safety and health related issues in terms of the NOSA MBO code to prevent future accidents / incidents.
• Maintains a safe working environment in and around his areas of operation i.e. Joint Bays, sealing end rigs, transformer bays, switch rooms, live outdoor yards and ensure that his labour is continuously aware of potential dangers
• Ensures that all mechanical and electrical equipment and tooling is in a safe working condition by personally checking
 
4. QUALITY
• Stipulate the basic procedure, partial responsibilities and use of resources to achieve and maintain the specified quality.
• Encourages a quality awareness for work among the personnel in his department with appropriate instructions, communications and training in accordance with procedure.
• Continuously monitor the quality of processes and systems through statistical analysis and initiates and verifies corrective and preventative action.
• Implement the documentation of the preventative quality system within his/her control in his/her department.
• Informs his Project Manager of any incident involving injury and/or damage to equipment by investigation of any such incident and putting forward recommendations to obviate a re-occurrence
 
5. LIAISON, COMMUNICATION AND CUSTOMER RELATIONS
• Ensures good co-operation by his team in conjunction with the relevant civil   
• operations
• To maintain a good level of communication with his team and his Project Manager  
• to maximise the flow of work and maintain a smooth working relationship
• To assist the client by responding pleasantly and accurately to any questions or  
• Queries he may have. Further to assist the client with any tests carried out by him.

Minimum requirements

APPLICATION CRITERIA:
•    Grade 12 with Math’s and Science 
•    Qualified Electrical Artisan 
 
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
•    General Cable and construction experience – min 2 years. 
•    MV cable jointing experience – min 2 years
•    Construction Regulations and ORHVS certified
•    Legal liability courses will be an added advantage
•    Valid code EB driver’s license
 
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
•    You must be prepared to work standby and across all regions of the country and from time to time, in Africa and abroad.
•    Must be prepared to do some business administration functions including compiling quotations from templates.
 
COMPUTER LITERACY & LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY:
•    Experience in Microsoft Windows, Word and Excel
•    Experience in Microsoft Projects and Power Point will be an advantage 
•    Must be fluent in English and Afrikaans
•    Report writing and QC documentation in English
